224 prisoners will be granted a special state pardon in view of Vesak Poya which falls tomorrow (15).

The Department of Prisons said the inmates will be pardoned by the President under vested in him through the 34th Article of the Constitution.

Accordingly, a pardon of 14 days will be granted to inmates for every year served in prison as of the 15th of May 2022.

Those imprisoned due to the failure to pay fines will have all payables due after tomorrow, waived off under the state pardon.

Furthermore, prisoners above 65-years as of tomorrow will be issued reduced sentences while those above 65-years who have served half their sentence as of tomorrow will be released from prison.

The Department stated under tomorrow’s pardon, inmates who have been sentenced to a 40-year or longer imprisonment by the Supreme Court and have served more than 20-years of their sentence as of tomorrow will have the remainder of their sentence waived off.
