Police have launched an operation to apprehend individuals driving under the influence.
Speaking to media, Senior Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the decision was taken after assessing data obtained from the National Transport Medical Institute on persons arriving to obtain various services.
Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said it has been revealed that a large number of lorry and bus drivers are driving under the influence.
He said on the 24th of January, 1,213 individuals visited the Transport Medical Institute to obtain medical certificates for driver’s licenses.
Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said among the samples obtained on the particular day, 145 of them contained various narcotic substances.
He said they uncovered individuals abusing cannabis, heroin and ICE applying to obtain driver’s licenses while those consuming alcohol regularly were also among the applicants.
The Senior Police Media Spokesman noted that based on the data, they were compelled to carry out operations to track down person’s driving under the influence.
He said if an individual is found to be guilty of driving under the influence the license will be cancelled while a fine of Rs.25,000 and a jail sentence will also be imposed.
