A special operation has been launched to inspect pavements and restaurants in Colombo and surrounding populated areas during the upcoming festive season.
Speaking during a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau this afternoon, the Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said the raids are being carried out in six different areas of Colombo with the assistance of the Food Inspectors and Public Health Inspectors.
Dr. Wijayamuni said many aspects are dependent on public behaviour during Christmas and the New Year adding last year’s mistakes must not be repeated.
He said there is a risk of substandard food items being sold in Colombo, Fort, Pettah, Borella and Wellawatta.
He said teams are operating under the supervision of six Medical Officers of Health in Colombo North, Central Colombo, Borella, Colombo East and Colombo West.
Dr. Wijayamuni said they hope to conduct raids till the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer said operations to identify and direct individuals not wearing a face mask for Rapid Antigen Tests will re-commence this week in populated areas such as Colombo, Fort and Pettah.
He said Medical Officers of Health will conduct operations with the assistance of the Police.
He said populated locations that fail to practice social distancing will be inspected.
