The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna says they will warmly welcome former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa if he intends on continuing in politics upon returning to Sri Lanka.
SLPP General Secretary Parliamentarian Sagara Kariyawasam speaking at a media briefing today said the former President must decide on whether he wishes to continue in politics when he returns.
He noted that former President Sirisena contested for Presidency under the ticket of the SLPP and questioned why the party would oppose him re-entering politics.
MP Kariyawasam said he is a Sri Lankan citizen adding that the government has a responsibility to ensure the former President has a safe passage to the country and must ensure his safety, security, and facilities for him to reside in the country.
He noted that former President Rajapaksa’s return to Sri Lanka should not be a special occasion, adding he is entitled to live in Sri Lanka.
MP Kariyawasam also stated that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will continue to function as the leader of the SLPP.
