Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera has made a written request from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna calling for disciplinary action to be taken against Colombo District Parliamentarian Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi.
Minister Weerasekera made the request based on a statement made by MP Sumithraarachchi during a media briefing, pertaining to the Officer In Charge of the Padukka Police Station being transferred.
MP Sumithraarachchi recently called a media briefing and revealed that he was resigning from his post as the Chairman of the Padukka Divisional Coordination Committee claiming he was disappointed due to the actions of Ministers Sarath Weeresekera and Gamini Lokuge, who represent the Colombo District and cited the transfer of the Padukka OIC as the most recent example.
Responding to the claims Minister Weerasekera said MP Sumithraarachchi made a serious allegation claiming the OIC was transferred based on a political agenda, following which a close associate of Minister Lokuge was appointed to the post.
Minister Weeresekera refuted the claims adding that the Padukka OIC was transferred due to complaints lodged against him, one being that two women were held at the Police Station without a female Police officer being present.
Minister Weerasekera claimed following the transfer, MP Sumithraarachchi had requested him both verbally and in writing to appoint an individual supportive of him as the OIC.
Minister Weerasekera said the Public Service Commission has clearly stated the Secretary of the subject Ministry has the authority to appoint an OIC, based on the recommendations of the Inspector General of Police.
The Minister added therefore it was the Ministry Secretary that made the appointment adding it was not political.
He claimed it was MP Sumithraarachchi who attempted to politically influence the appointment.
