The Sri Lanka Freedom Party May Day rally was held at the SLFP headquarters down Darley Road under the leadership of former President SLFP Chairman Maithripala Sirisena.
The party also held a rally in Polonnaruwa with the participation of the farming community.
Speaking at the Rally the former President said the Gotabaya Rajapaksa led government took over a peaceful and functioning country but managed to turn the economy upside down through soaring inflation and shortages of essentials.
The former President said that in order to overcome the challenges facing the country, a government that understands the problems of the people should be formed.
He recalled that the present problems did not exist during his term in office.
Former President Sirisena reiterated that May Day symbolises labourers and the working classes who take to the streets on the 1st of May.
The SLFP Chairman claimed that the Farmer’s protest was also organized today in protest of the government’s actions.
Former President Sirisena said people have taken to the streets calling for solutions to the crisis within the country.
He gave his blessing to the peoples the struggle being formed around the country.
The former Head of State said the Polonnaruwa farmers are calling for the government to go home.
