Minister of Ports and Shipping Rohitha Abeygunawardena says Sri Lanka will regain full ownership of the West Terminal of the Colombo Port after 35 years.
Addressing a media briefing at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna headquarters this morning, the Minister said certain individuals who are unaware of operations at the Port including imports and exports, are interpreting the hand over as a method of leasing the West Terminal.
Minister Abeygunawardena added this is a mere investment while the funds required to make the terminal a wholesome and complete terminal, will be provided by India’s Adani Company and a local firm representing Sri Lanka.
He claimed that the East Terminal of the Colombo Port is currently being constructed.
The Minister said completing the West Terminal and equipping it costs USD 700 million, adding it is entirely borne by the Adani Group.
Journalists meanwhile questioned the Minister of the revelation of the name of a former Minister in the Pandora Papers, that uncovered secret wealth and transactions of world leaders.
The Minister said if any individual has earned money illegally in Sri Lanka, the government will act in accordance with the country’s law.
He added they were made aware of the Pandora Papers this morning, while a statement cannot be made over the matter just yet.
The Minister said the individual responsible cannot shun the law as his distinction in this situation is irrelevant.
