The Ministry of Agriculture says Sri Lanka will receive 65,000 metric tonnes of urea from India, within the first two weeks of July.
Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera revealed of the donation arrival date while speaking at the progress review of agricultural projects of the Ministry which are funded by overseas entities.
The urea consignment which was procured by India for use in the country from Oman, was donated to Sri Lanka as a solution to problems within the agriculture sector.
Minster Amaraweera said the Agriculture Ministry will use delivery channels such as Agricultural service supply agencies, the Fertilizer Secretariat of Sri Lanka, Colombo Commercial Fertilizers Ltd and the Ceylon Fertilizer Company to distribute the stock of urea to farmers, within two to three days of delivery.
The Minister added that a sack of urea will be sold to farmers at a cost of Rs.10,000. He added that the fixed price was agreed through talks with Agriculture sector representatives.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera also said the Cabinet of Ministers did not oppose the price when presented at the Cabinet meeting.
