The General Manager of the Sri Lanka Railways Dhammika Jayasundara says Sri Lanka Railways has launched a new programme to attract tourists.
Jayasundara said steps have been taken to introduce steam trains, air-conditioned compartments and upgrading railway stations in tourist hotspots.
Jayasundara speaking at a media briefing at the Government Information Department this morning said the upcountry railway line is a major attraction amongst tourists due to the beauty of the surrounding nature.
He said discussions will be held with the Ministry of Tourism to garner their support in developing train stations.
Jayasundara said major attractions such as Ella and the Nine Arch Bridge in Demodara must be developed.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board Kingsley Ranawaka said all SLTB employees have been fully vaccinated.
He said SLTB employees will extend their support to bringing back normalcy in the country.
He said employees are in direct contact with commuters and exchange money owing to bus fares collections.
Ranawaka said certain employees were escorted to Colombo in buses in order to be vaccinated.
