The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has decided to provide free legal assistance to individuals who face gas related accidents in order to seek justice before court.
Issuing a statement, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said the SJB decided to intervene on behalf of the victims as the present administration has no plans to prevent gas related accidents.
MP Premadasa said the public is suffering daily due to the government’s substandard policies.
The Opposition Leader said the government is yet to provide a solution to gas related accidents.
He said the subject Ministers are avoiding the public as they have no response.
He questioned whether appointing a committee was the only solution and as to who will be responsible for the loss of lives.
MP Premadasa further questioned what form of compensation will be provided for the victims of more than 600 gas related accidents. He said the SJB will assist each victim in obtaining compensation.
Meanwhile, commenting on the difficulties faced by the farming community due to substandard fertiliser, the Opposition Leader said farmers have been severely affected as they have not received fertiliser in a timely manner.
He said the price of 1MT of urea fertiliser has increased to USD 1,000 from USD 394 adding a bag of 50kg of fertiliser will be sold at Rs.12,000.
MP Premadasa said the government has stepped away from the process of providing fertiliser adding private firms are now importing chemical fertilisers.
He claimed the government is deliberately destroying the farming community.
