The Anti-Corruption Force of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya convened a media briefing today pertaining to the controversial Kerawalapitiya LNG Power Plant.
Speaking during the media briefing, Parliamentarian Ajith P Perera said the government is treacherously changing the correct policy which was followed when he was the subject Minister of Energy.
MP Perera said the majority are aware of the term LPG or Liquid Petroleum Gas adding however many are unaware of Liquid Natural Gas, which is a cheaper alternative to LPG.
The Parliamentarian said LNG can be used to generate electricity adding it is cost effective and both environmentally and economically friendly.
He said during his tenure as the subject Minister he received approval for a project to convert all diesel power plants to LNG plants.
He said the present administration moved forward with the plan and in February called for open tenders to build the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit required for supplying LNG and for building the pipeline from the unit to supply gas to all main locations in the country that requires gas.
He said this was the correct policy adding it was the policy of the former government and the policy of the first one and half years of the present administration.
The Parliamentarian claimed however, Minister Basil Rajapaksa completely disregarded the policy and met with the Head of Energy Division of Fortress Energy, who happens to be a Sri Lankan.
He added they have reports that certain US intelligence agencies are also involved.
MP Perera said these groups as a ploy to seize political and state power in the country, have purchased 40% shares of the Kerawalapitiya Power Plant and have obtained the sole contract to supply LNG to the country.
He said a demand for gas which requires a second FSRU is not prevalent, adding the monopoly to supply LNG falls with Fortress Energy.
