Chief Opposition Whip Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella says Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarians will not attend Parliament sessions until their security is ensured.
MP Kiriella made this statement over an incident of a group of government Parliamentarians attempting to assault MP Manusha Nanayakkara.
MP Kiriella said the security of SJB MPs has been compromised adding that they will not attend Parliament sessions until their safety is ensured.
MP Kiriella said, yesterday MP Nanayakkara requested five extra minutes in the chamber during the Budget debate, adding that a group of 15 government MPs approached the MP and tried to assault him in the opposition lobby.
The Chief Opposition Whip said they assumed that the incident was behind them and arrived in Parliament today.
He said after MP Nanayakkara’s speech in the House today, government MPs once again approached him and sought to assault him.
MP Kiriella said when a statement is made in Parliament it should be responded to, not through assault.
He added opposition MPs cannot enter Parliament if such incidents are repeatedly taking place and announced that they will not be attending sessions.
The SJB MPs subsequently left the Parliament chamber in protest.
Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala meanwhile said government MPs cannot enter the opposition lobby to assault people.
MP Alawathuwala said until the Speaker ensures their safety SJB MPs will withdraw from the House.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara Jayamaha said there is great public disdain towards all 225 Members of Parliament.
The MP said it is the responsibility of all MPs to address this.
However, MP Jayamaha charged the government with worsening the present situation.
He also claimed that government MPs cannot visit villages due to public anger towards them, and accused government MPs of instead attacking the opposition.
Meanwhile, State Minister Kanchana Wijesekera says the opposition from the inception has engaged in insulting the government and spreading false claims.
The State Minister said the opposition cannot use Parliament to repeatedly lie to the public.
He said the opposition walked out of Parliament as they have nothing concrete to speak of.
