Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Hector Appuhamy says the party made great contributions to free the Employees Provident Fund from the proposed surcharge tax bill.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, MP Appuhamy said the public must remain vigilant as to whether the proposed tax would be amended again in the future.

The Parliamentarian extended his gratitude to the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, members of the SJB, other opposition political parties, and others who assisted in efforts to save the EPF.

He said the government may again attempt to embezzle funds adding the present administration misused Samurdhi funds to pay the Rs.5,000 allowance for low-income earners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On a separate note, the MP criticized the government and Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila’s elaborate acceptance ceremony of the 40,000MT fuel consignment from the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka recently, calling it a shame.
