Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne says a system will be introduced under a SJB-led government where the Attorney General’s Department will not be able to withdraw cases over incidents of corruption and irregularities.
Speaking during a media briefing this morning, MP Wickramaratne said while the public suffers the government continues to steal, adding the International Monetary Fund and other loan providers have lost faith in the country.
He added investors are not considering Sri Lanka as a possible investment apart from those with black money.
MP Wickramaratne said the SJB is creating a programme regarding the economy and one pillar in the programme is to end corruption.
He stressed the party will strengthen the legal framework for the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
The MP said at present if a complaint is lodged against an individual at the Bribery Commission a picture of the incident will be released to media while no one will hear of it again as there will be no further proceedings.
MP Wickramaratne said such complaints should not be a political but a judicial matter.
He stressed the SJB will strengthen relevant laws adding those who do wrong must be brought to book.
He claimed around 50 cases that were filed by the Attorney General’s Department were withdrawn adding the SJB will establish an office for individuals filing cases.
He added it will be an independent commission for persons who file legal cases to ensure politicians cannot intervene while stating that if a case is filed it cannot be withdrawn unless it is dismissed by Court.
He said the country’s path cannot be reversed if corruption doesn’t end.
Joining the media briefing, Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva claimed there are attempts to remove Ajith Nivard Cabraal from the post of the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
MP de Silva said there are major conflicts of opinion within the government over the causes of the prevalent crises.
The Parliamentarian said the internal conflicts have escalated due to attempts to pass the blame on.
He said there were claims circulating on social media that the ‘Rajapaksa’ family has decided to sack Cabraal as the Governor.
