The Samagi Jana Balawegaya charges that the present administration which came in to power promising to ensure national security, has now put people’s health at risk.
Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara said at a time that the coronavirus death toll is rising, serious concerns have arisen regarding food security, due to arbitrary decisions reached regarding fertiliser.
MP Nanayakkara claimed several farmers are considering if they will continue farming at a loss.
The MP also claimed the government is attempting to amend the Gazette Notification issued banning the importation of chemical fertiliser, and grant permission for one company to import chemical fertiliser.
MP Nanayakkara further claimed there may be a shortage of animal feed next year, as maze farmers are also affected.
He added it will also reduce milk production, which will lead to a serious crisis regarding food security.
The MP stated an income of USD 2.5 billion is earned through agricultural exports annually, and questioned if the government is attempting to lose this income.
MP Nanayakkara also questioned if the rice imported recently from Pakistan was organic, as the government decided to ban the use of chemical fertiliser, considering people’s health and safety.
