The Samagi Jana Balawegaya today requested the government to appoint a special Trial-at-Bar to probe the death of Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala, who was murdered in Nittambuwa during the unrest on the 9th of May.
Chief Opposition Whip MP Lakshman Kiriella said such a bench will be able to expedite legal action.
A Vote of Condolence was taken up today on behalf of the late MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala, in Parliament.
Speaking at the debate, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said groups of the United Nations Parliamentary Assembly have also requested the government to commence an independent investigation on the unrest.
Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena requested the Speaker to compensate those who lost their homes and belongings during the violent incidents witnessed on the 9th of May, in addition to the Commission appointed to probe the incidents.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the SJB will not condone terrorist acts that took the life of a Parliamentarian.
He said anarchy, suppression and political victimisation re-appeared through incidents on the 9th of May.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe questioned why former MP Kumara Welgama was attacked on the road, when he was the first individual who called on the President to resign from his post.
The Premier added it was the former MPs rival in the area who attacked him on the 9th.
However, Premier Wickremesinghe claimed the former MPs supporters saved him from this unknown attacker who used these incidents to inflict personal hate.
The Prime Minister said he has written to the United Nations Parliamentary Assembly to probe the incident, if a local probe is insufficient.
Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa meanwhile said political groups are taunting the public to act on their anger and transform it to aggression.
MP Lakshman Kiriella said prompt investigations must conclude to ensure the late MP is served justice.
