General Secretary of the United National Party Palitha Range Bandara accuses the Samagi Jana Balawegaya of attempting to empower the President through the proposed No-Confidence Motion.
Speaking during a media briefing today, former State Minister Range Bandara noted that if the proposed No-Confidence Motion is passed against the present government, then the Prime Minister must resign and the Cabinet of Ministers stands dissolved.
He said in that event, the powers vested with the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Ministers who are Members of Parliament will be transferred to the Head of State.
The UNP General Secretary said accordingly, the President who already posses executive powers will have another opportunity to appoint a Prime Minister of his choice and a set of Ministers who will be taking forward his policies.
Former State Minister Range Bandara said therefore he is of the view that the SJB is in knowingly or unknowingly is attempting to empower the President through the No-Confidence Motion.
He said such a move is unacceptable at a time when the entire country is demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksha.
Former State Minister Range Bandara also said people have already rallied against the current administration and therefore now it’s up to the opposition parties in Parliament to take meaningful steps to change the fortunes of the country.
He said when the UNP came to power in 2015, the former administration immediately reduced prices of essential commodities, increased salaries and streamlined the economy.
The UNP General Secretary said the time is apt for MPs and current Parliament to select an individual or a program that can deliver similar results to the people who are severely burdened by the actions of the present government.
