The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has condemned the conduct of elaborate celebrations on Independence Day, at great expenses, in the face of the present situation in the country.
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa did not attend the 74th Independence Day celebrations held at the Independence Square today.
When inquired by NewsRadio, Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala said the Opposition Leader did not attend the celebrations as he did not approve of holding such ceremonies considering the burdens faced by the public.
MP Alawathuwala said the present administration has clearly displayed it inability to provide solutions to issues faced by citizens.
The Parliamentarian said throughout the past few months the public faced shortages of essential items including gas and food items, then due to gas leak related explosions.
He added the public is now facing power outages due the prevailing power crisis.
He said it raises the question whether Sri Lanka can enjoy independence under such circumstances.
MP Alawathuwala said as public representatives they are concerned if it was suitable to hold such celebrations and vehicle parades incurring high fuel costs at a time when power plants are facing shortages of fuel to generate power.
He said independence gained in 1948 must be celebrated but at a more opportune time.
