Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has informed that he will withdraw from the post of Deputy Speaker of House when Parliament convenes on the 19th of April.
Speaking at a media briefing in Ruwanwella, the Parliamentarian said a Deputy Speaker will be appointed when Parliament convenes in May.
The MP said the Sri Lanka Freedom Party reached a clear decision to withdraw from all posts held within the government amidst the hardships the public has had to face owing to the actions of the government.
MP Siyambalapitiya said queues have been forming for days and the public is under immense pressure and have now resorted to taking to the streets continuously against the government.
He added the SLFP during talks decided to continue in the roles of Deputy Speaker and the Deputy Chairpersons of Committees that were held by the SLFP.
However, MP Siyambalapitiya said he decided to vacate the post.
He said had he stepped down last week the first agenda of Parliament, which convened to discuss the prevalent crisis, would’ve been to elect a new Deputy Speaker adding such a move would be inappropriate amidst a crisis.
Therefore, Siyambalapitiya said he will remain as the Deputy Speaker till the 19th while a new Deputy Speaker will be elected on the 4th of May when Parliament is due to convene.
