Six persons have been arrested for assaulting a group of students attached to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya, last evening.
Speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo today, Senior Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said a medical student receiving treatment at the Negombo District General Hospital, another person who is also in hospital, the driver of the vehicle used during the incident and three others who surrendered to police this evening have been arrested.
Senior DIG Ajith Rohana noted that other than the medical student in hospital, the remaining five individuals will be produced before court today.
Meanwhile, two Police teams have been appointed to probe the incident where a group had assaulted four students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya, last evening.
The two teams will function under the supervision of the Senior DIG of the Western Province.
Four students of the Faculty of Medicine sustained injuries last evening in the attack by an unknown group.
Meanwhile, Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara has said he has informed the Inspector General of Police to conduct an impartial investigation over the incident.
Minister Sarath Weerasekara said an investigation will also be conducted over the claim that the group that attacked the student used a vehicle that belongs to the state.
Police said three students are receiving treatment at the Ragama Teaching Hospital while another student has been admitted to the Negombo District General Hospital.
The students were identified as fourth-year students of the Ragama Medical Faculty.
