Civil activist Shehan Malaka Gamage who was arrested yesterday for convening a media briefing pertaining to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks and allegedly spreading misinformation, has been released on a surety bail of Rs.15,000 and two personal bails of Rs.500,000 each.
The order was issued when he was produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court this morning.
In addition, the Court issued an international travel ban and ordered for his passport to be handed over to Court.
Gamage was also ordered to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department on the last Sunday of each month and for necessary steps to be taken to confirm his residency.
The CID had conducted an investigation into several statements made by Shehan Malaka Gamage during a media briefing held in August 2021 pertaining to the Easter Sunday attacks and had taken steps to submit the final report on the investigations to the Attorney General.
Accordingly, the CID had taken steps to arrest the individual and produce him before Court yesterday after the Attorney General had determined Gamage had committed an offense under Section 120 of the Penal Code.
The case is set to be taken up once again on the 29th of March.
