The consideration of the bail application filed by the wife of Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, Shashi Weerawansa, over the forged passport case, will be taken up today.
The decision was announced by Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe yesterday.
The Magistrate also ordered to issue summons to the Attorney General over the case.
The bail application was filed before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on the condition that an appeal will be filed before a High Court challenging the sentence issued by the lower court.
Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced to a two-year rigorous prison sentence on Friday (27) in relation to a case filed over producing false information to obtain a diplomatic passport.
She was also fined Rs.100,000.
The Magistrate informed that the failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months in prison.
The Criminal Investigation Department filed the case against Shashi Weerawansa on the 23rd of January 2015, alleging that she committed a punishable offence under the Immigration and Emigration Act by possessing a forged passport.
The CID informed that Shashi Weerawansa was born in 1967 while the forged passport has her birth year as 1971.
Police at the time also informed Court that Shashi Weerawansa has two National Identity Cards bearing both birthdays.
