Several protests were held across the country today by farmers calling for solutions to be provided to the fertiliser crisis for the Maha season.
A protest in this regard was held in Madatugama, Kekirawa this morning by several farming groups.
Commenting on issues faced as a result of not receiving fertiliser to commence agricultural activities for the Maha season the protesting farmers said the Mahaweli Authority has been directed to issue necessary water for farming adding however farmers are unable to proceed without fertiliser.
They said 11% of the country’s land is reserved for agriculture purposes while 27% of the working force is made up of the farming community.
He said the subject Minister and the government has made several blunders adding burdening the farming community will lead to a famine.
Speaking during another protest in Dambagolla, Mahiyanganaya this morning, farmers said the liquid fertiliser provided by the government is ineffective on corn crops adding they are unable to carry out daily activities without fertiliser.
They further said chili crops have also been affected due to the use of organic fertiliser.
