The Department of Sports Development will take action against several athletes, a coach and manager of the Sri Lanka Junior Athletics team.
The group is reported to have held a party while in quarantine at the Sugathadasa Hotel premises in violation of quarantine regulations in place and the code of conduct.
The Sri Lanka Junior Athletics Team was directed to the Nilwala quarantine centre in Matara upon arriving in the island after participating in the 60th Indian Athletics Championship, in India recently.
Following a request that facilities available at the centre were inadequate, the Ministry of Sports intervened and lodged the group at the Sugathadasa Hotel premises to quarantine.
The Ministry has taken steps to conduct a disciplinary inquiry through a three-member committee following reports that several members of the group behaved in an undisciplined manner on the first day spent at the hotel.
Several others were also later found to have violated quarantine regulations and the code of conduct and were issued a four month suspension of the high talent training allowance, suspension from using the properties of the Sports Department, while the coach and manager were banned from attending international competitions for 6 months and one year respectively.
The decision was reached by the three-member disciplinary committee.
