The Police Special Task Force has discovered several boxes of ammunition, during excavations of a land area on Ramya Road, Kilinochchi.
Two boxes of rusted ammunition used for T-56 firearms were found in the property on Tuesday.
It is suspected that the ammunition was used during the conflict.
The Police STF took steps to conduct further excavations at the site, after reporting the matter to the Kilinochchi Magistrate’s Court.
Accordingly during excavations, 84 boxes containing 750 ammunition for T-56 firearms were found, with metal coverings.
The Police Media Unit said 46,000 rounds of ammunition used for T-56 assault rifles were found with the coverings removed, while 800 rounds of ammunition used for M60 firearms, and 400 rounds of ammunition for Multi-Purpose Machine Guns were also found at the site.
Further excavations are being carried out.
