Senior Deputy Inspector General of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon is due to appear before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka today.
The Senior DIG appears before the Commission after being issued summons to inquire into the failure to uphold the rule of law during the violence that broke out on Monday (9).
Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne and the Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva were also summoned over the charges by the Human Rights Commission on Wednesday.
Based on the details that were uncovered, during the hearing on Wednesday, summons was issued for Senior DIG Tennakoon to appear before the Commission.
Violence broke out after a group of pro-Rajapaksa protesters following a gathering at the Temple Trees began breaking down the structures that were set up outside the Temple Trees by anti-government protesters.
The pro-Rajapaksa group then began clashing with the peaceful protesters which led to several individuals sustaining injuries.
The structures were also set alight by the group.
The pro-Rajapaksa protesters then proceeded to march towards the Galle Face Green where they destroyed the structures and engaged in further clashes.
