The opposition says for the first time in history, due to actions of the present administration, Police will be compelled to provide security to paddy fields and farmlands.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, former Minister P Harrison said although the public is familiar with the theft of jewellery and other valuables, break-ins are now reported from every corner including farmlands.
The former Minister also claimed the prices of vegetables, eggs and chicken will increase further in the coming months.
P Harrison said an egg will be sold at Rs.50 during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period while a kilogram of chicken will be available between Rs.1,200-1,300.
He said a kilogram of Nadu rice will increase to around Rs.300 while Samba and Keeri Samba will not be available at less than Rs.500.
Former Minister P Harrison said farmers are distressed at present while the public will also not be able to afford goods.
He noted the current volatility could lead to an increase in thefts.
On a separate note, Former Minister P Harrison says the government should instruct gas companies to provide compensation to the victims of recent gas leak explosions.
The former Minister said the committee appointed by the President has clearly indicated the gas companies are responsible for the explosions as they had change the propane-butane composition in cylinders.
He said the gas leak explosions occurred since issues with the cylinders and not due to issues in connecting pipes, regulators or stoves.
P Harrison said therefore families that lost loved ones should be compensated with at least Rs. 2.5 million while at least Rs.1 million should be given as compensation to those sustained injuries.
He said it is the duty of the government to intervene and ensure justice to the victims.
