Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena says consumers have been granted the opportunity to purchase rice from Sathosa outlets at reasonable prices.
The Minister speaking to media in Pettah, during an inspection tour of several rice outlets in the area this afternoon said, consumers can visit Sathosa outlets and purchase rice if prices at supermarkets are higher.
Minister Gunawardana said rice is not being sold at exorbitant prices, claiming this is a rumour that is being spread by the rice mafia.
The Minister added the wholesale price of a kilogram of kekulu rice is Rs.100, nadu rice Rs.105, and Rs.118 for a kilogram of samba.
The Minister noted that the retail price increases owing to transport and bagging costs, while an additional profit margin is also imposed before determining the final price.
Minister Bandula Gunawardana said having considered all such facts, Sathosa provides the cheapest price for rice.
