Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara says if an injunction order was issued by courts preventing any protests from being staged in Colombo, strict legal action will be taken against persons who join those demonstrations and against the organizers.
Minister Weerasekara said health authorities have already sought court intervention to prevent such protests from being staged owing to the prevailing coronavirus situation in the country.
He said opposition politicians are attempting to jeopardize the COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
The Minister said when the country is facing a health emergency, the opposition should support the government and steer the country in the right direction.
He said however the present opposition is attempting to gain political advantage while the country is dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.
The Minister said despite the attempts of the opposition, he will take all measures to ensure the safety of the citizens.
The opposition says despite any obstacles it will stage the protest in Colombo as planned tomorrow.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara Jayamaha said they will not back down despite threats levelled by Minister Sarath Weerasekara or the government.
He said the government has been threatened by the opposition at present.
MP Nalin Bandara said the government cannot face the public due to its actions and now has resorted to silence the opposition.
