The Mayor of Moratuwa Saman Lal Fernando, the Chairman of the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha Jayantha Rohana, Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member Manjula Prasanna and Dan Priyasad have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department in relation to a group of peaceful protesters being assaulted opposite Temple Trees and at Galle Face on the 9th of May.

The suspects are part of the group of 22 persons that were instructed to be arrested over the unrest.

The Attorney General on Monday instructed the Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne and the CID to record statements and arrest 22 individuals, including former Ministers, and Senior DIG-Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon in connection with the attack on protesters if sufficient evidence persists of their involvement.

Senior DIG-Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon meanwhile recorded a statement with the CID for nearly 10 hours over last week’s violence.

Senior DIG Tennakoon left the CID at 1am today.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarians Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake were arrested by the CID on these grounds last evening.

Meanwhile, the CID is due to record statements today from six other SLPP MPs in relation to the assault on peaceful protesters.
