The Samagi Jana Balawegaya staged a protest this afternoon against government inaction to the rising cost of living, shortage of fertiliser and the sale of state assets to foreign entities.
A protest march commenced at 3pm from the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Colombo and reached the Colpetty Junction heading towards the Galle Face Green.
Heavy traffic congestion was reported along several roads owing to the SJB protest.
Meanwhile, several buses with SJB supporters who intended on joining the protest were searched at road blocks set up by Police Stations across the island. Police this morning turned back some buses.
NewsRadio correspondents stated that protesters who were unable to attend the protest held protest campaigns in their respective towns.
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa today called on the public to prepare to create a new era in the country.
Addressing protesters from the Galle Face Green today, MP Premadasa said under a government led by the SJB, surnames will not be prioritised when issuing posts and designations.
Premadasa said corrupt activities have led to the country’s downfall and livelihoods, people remain in hunger, while prices of essential items have skyrocketed with a shortage of goods also prevalent.
MP Premadasa added the government through commissions, bribery and extortions are filling their personal pockets.
Therefore, the MP called on the public to prepare themselves to take responsibility for a new vision and programme in the country.
He said talented, knowledgeable, and intellectual people will be given posts in order to uplift the country.
Premadasa claimed the country of 22 million people will be uplifted along with economic development while corruption and fraud will be eliminated.
