Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says a famine could break out in the country while child and maternal malnutrition could also rise in future.
Speaking during an event in Eppawala, MP Premadasa said the government that came into power claiming to work for the people has increased prices of essential commodities.
The Parliamentarian said the farming community is helpless due to the shortage of fertiliser, unjust prices for seeds adding that a chemical fertiliser black-market mafia has also formed due to the fertiliser shortage.
He questioned how farmers can earn a living due to the fivefold increase in expenses.
MP Premadasa said Ministers are clamouring to hold media briefings to announce prices increases.
The Opposition Leader questioned how citizens can continue to live in a failed state with a depleting economy.
MP Premadasa said ministers who do not understand difficulties faced by the public are making various false statements.
