The names of Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma have been proposed to the post of President after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigns from the post.

It is reported that discussions have commenced to appoint one of the two individuals without any divisions within Parliament through a consensus.

A special discussion in this regard was held at the residence of MP Thalatha Athukorala in Nugegoda last evening.

Members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the group of independent MPs led by Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, and members of the nine affiliate parties and several other groups were part of the talks last evening.

Political sources claim discussions were held over appointing one individual as President and the other as the Prime Minister.

Speaking to media subsequent to the discussion, MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said a consensus has been reached to a great extent adding that talks will be a success.=

A discussion has been held at the headquarters of the Sri Lanka Communist Party with members of the nine affiliate political parties to the government that declared themselves independent.

During the discussions last evening a decision was reached to urge the President and the Prime Minister to resign from the post.

Speaking to media, MP Wimal Weerawansa said an all-party consensus government should be established promptly with all parties while a clear programme should be formulated for the future.

MP Weerawansa said discussions will be held with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and other parties as well.

Meanwhile, MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara said they don’t need to wait for the 13th of July to begin discussions.

He said decisions can be reached now in order to be enforced after the 13th of July.

Furthermore, MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana thera said protesters should also be involved in the process of creating an all-party government as they paved the way for the President to step down.

The thera said the President and the Prime Minister should leave promptly to allow this change to take place.
