Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has condemned the threat against media and media freedom.
MP Premadasa expressed his views over an incident of several journalists and editors being summoned to the Criminal Investigations Department over reporting an alleged garlic scam at Sathosa.
MP Premadasa said Article 14(1) of the Constitution clearly indicates freedom of speech and expression, adding that in a society that values democracy such intimidation towards the media is unacceptable.
The Opposition Leader said it is the responsibility of the media to expose corruption and fraud in the country claiming no one has the right to summon journalists who carry out their responsibilities before the CID for questioning or to intimidate or influence them.
Premadasa added at a time that the Right to Information Act is active, such summons cannot be issued.
He condemned the direct or indirect restrictions on media freedom, intimidation and censorships on media.
MP Premadasa added the legal team of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will join hands with journalists against such actions and provide them the legal assistance required.
