The Police today informed that the remains of the individuals, who died in the explosion in Sainthamaruthu on the 26th of April 2019, will be exhumed tomorrow for a DNA test in relation to Pulasthini Mahendran alias Sarah Jasmine.
The Police Media Unit said 17 persons, including adults and children, were among those killed in the bombing.
However, Police said they did not recover any DNA of Sarah Jasmine who was reportedly at the scene at the time of the explosion.
Sarah Jasmine was identified as the wife of the suicide bomber who targeted the St. Sebastian Church in Katuwapitiya during the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
Police said investigations conducted on two occasions did not reveal any evidence, and therefore investigating officers decided to re-examine the remains.
The Police Media Unit in a statement said the Kalmunai Magistrate’s Court granted consent for the request to exhume the remains.
Accordingly, the remains of the deceased will be exhumed for DNA testing at the Ampara Public Cemetery tomorrow morning.
The exhumation will be carried out under the observation of the Ampara Magistrate while the Judicial Medical Officer, all Police officers, and officers of the Department of Government Analyst who were present during initial investigations will be present tomorrow.
