The government claims fuel prices increased due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking to media in Embilipitiya State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura acknowledged fuel prices have increased steeply at present.
He noted the government had to increase fuel prices as oil prices increased sharply in the world market due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The State Minister said however the country will be uplifted to the previous state in a few months.
He claimed the government sees the difficulties and burdens faced by the people adding the country was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as well.
State Minister Wakkumbura said discussions were held with Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal who stated the prevailing crisis can be resolved within a short period of time following which concessions can be provided to the people.
The State Minister said sources through which the country receives dollars have been disrupted and issued directives to move forward by clearing avenues in this regard.
He claimed the government didn’t come to power to burden the people adding it hopes to provide relief to the public in the same manner concessions were provided amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
