The Public Health Inspectors Union warns that rural hospitals are at risk of shutting down due to the prevailing shortage of medicine.
Speaking during a media briefing, Chairman of the Union Upul Rohana said operations and services at central medicine storages, terminals and rural hospitals have been disrupted due to the political and economic crises and due to the curfew.
Rohana said the public in rural areas are facing great difficulties in obtaining daily treatment for pre-existing conditions.
He said many essential medicines are unavailable despite rural hospitals functioning.
The Chairman of the Union urged health officials to promptly take steps to provide facilities for the public to obtain treatment.
He also urged for treatment centres to remain open.
Rohana called on donors, expatriate workers, and Sri Lankans living overseas to provide aid to overcome the medicine shortage.
