The opposition has refuted claims by certain government factions, who have attributed the depreciation of the rupee to the coronavirus.
Parliamentarian Rajitha Senaratne speaking at a media briefing today said the depreciation of the rupee was a result of the government’s mismanagement.
The MP said there is no relation between the depreciation of the rupee and the coronavirus.
The MP said Sri Lanka’s rupee depreciated from Rs.180.10 to Rs.201.52 by 12%.
Senaratne said in Pakistan the rupee depreciated 8% Bangladesh 0.44%, Nepal by 2.48%, India by 2.23% and Afghanistan 3.33%.
He attributed Sri Lanka’s higher percentage due to mismanagement and not the coronavirus.
MP Senaratne added Sri Lanka is ranked 45th among countries that violate human rights as cited by the United Nations Human Rights Council.
He said Sri Lanka is among countries such as Belarus, Burundi, Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Israel, Nicaragua, Myanmar, South Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Turkmenistan and Tanzania.
