Members of port trade unions have expressed their displeasure over the Sri Lanka Ports Authority spending a large sum of money to mark the dawn of the new year.
The unions claim that hundreds of Buddhist monks engaged in all-night pirith and an almsgiving.
General Secretary of the All Ceylon Ports General Employees Union Niroshan Gorakanage said while such religious observances are required in the new year, large sums need not be spent.
Gorakanage said according to information they received nearly Rs.30 million was spent on the new year commemorations.
He added they also received reports of large quantities of food organised for the event going to waste and garbage trucks loading the waste to be disposed.
