The Ministry of Trade reveals that the first stock of rice imported under the additional credit line from India, will arrive next week.
Accordingly, the Ministry said 40,000MT of rice including Nadu, Samba and Kekulu rice which will be imported from India will be distributed at a concessionary rate.
Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana said the main aim of the government is to provide concessions to the people, during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year period.
The Minister believes that malicious traders are looking to artificially inflate the price of rice during the festive season by creating a scarcity in the market, adding he hopes to combat this situation through concessionary rice distribution.
The Trade Ministry said the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation has taken steps to import and distribute stocks of rice in a systematic manner.
