Minister of Industries Wimal Weerawansa says he will not allow the government to discourage farmers, through organic farming.
Minister Weerawansa said decisions which affect the food security of the country must be reversed.
He noted it is a sensitive issue adding that the country’s commercial agriculture shouldn’t be messed with.
He added if the agriculture industry collapses, food security will also collapse.
The Minister said if there is an issue regarding fertiliser a solution must be sought in a manner that will not affect the agriculture industry.
Minister Weerawansa noted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to revoke two Acts, due to protests by farmers, adding it does not affect the reputation.
He stressed therefore the incorrect decisions made regarding the agriculture industry must be reversed promptly, adding there is no shame in doing so.
The Minister further said a larger amount than the amount needed for fertiliser concessions must now be paid to farmers in compensation, which shows that the decisions reached in this regard were wrong.
