The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says the government must take steps to address the shortage of cement prior to implementing the ‘100,000 Projects’ rural development programme proposed through the Budget.
Speaking during a media briefing this morning, Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara Jayamaha said the rural development programme does not include the construction of essential bridges or buildings.
MP Jayamaha claimed the government attempted to fund the programme by imposing a 25 percent tax on the Employees Provident Fund through the Surcharge Tax Bill.
The Parliamentarian said construction workers have lost employment due to the cement shortage.
He questioned whether the government was proposing alternative ‘100,000 Projects’ instead of constructions due to the cement shortage.
He charged the rural development programme is focused on personal agendas and obtaining commissions.
