State Minister Lohan Ratwatte claims he was not sacked and that he resigned from his ministerial portfolio as State Minister of Prison Management & Prisoners’ Rehabilitation on his own accord.
Speaking to the BBC Sinhala Service, State Minister Ratwatte said he resigned due to inconvenience caused to the government.
He resigned from the post yesterday, taking responsibility for the incidents which took place at the Welikada and Anuradhapura Prisons.
Meanwhile, an official of the Office of the Prime Minister has confirmed to the BBC that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is currently on an official visit to Italy, had telephoned State Minister Lohan Ratwatte and asked him to resign from his post.
Tamil National People’s Front Parliamentarian GG Ponnambalam taking to Twitter said a State Minister who visited the Anuradhapura Prison on the afternoon of the 12th of September, on Prisoners’ Day, had directed a pistol at the prisoners and made them kneel.
Ratwatte will continue to hold the post of State Minister of Gem & Jewellery Related Industries.
