Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Anura Priyadharshana Yapa today requested the government to resign immediately and facilitate the appointment of an interim Cabinet.
Speaking in Parliament today, MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said citizens are distressed and therefore have taken to the street.
He said the public has also called for the resignation of the entire government and therefore it should hand over the administration of the country to an interim Cabinet which will consist of members of both the government and the opposition.
MP Yapa noted that they identified that more competent individuals are in the opposition at present and therefore they decided to defect from the government and function as an independent group in Parliament.
He said the newly appointed Ministers are only seated in the second or third row benches in Parliament.
MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said the move is evidence that the government is unwilling to listen to the concerns of the public.
He said the current trend should change immediately, since the country does not belong to the President, the Prime Minister or to a specific family.
In response to the claims, Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa should not make immature statements and deceive the house.
He said the seating arrangements in the house are made by the Speaker of the House with the consent of the government and therefore the claim made by MP Anura Yapa does not have any basis.
