The Department of Irrigation says wetland areas around Sri Lanka are receiving considerable volumes of rainfall.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Director of Water Management at the Irrigation Department Engineer D Abeysiriwardena said six sluice gates of the Rajanganaya reservoir, five from Deduru oya and two from the Angamuwa reservoir were opened due to rising water levels.
Therefore he requested residents of Kurunegala and Puttalam, in low lying areas around the Deduru oya and Kala oya to be vigilant.
However, he confirmed that a risk of flooding is not prevalent yet.
However, he said authorities will be forced to open sluice gates in Anuradhapura, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa if the current rainfall volumes continue.
He warned the public having baths in water bodies to be mindful of the rising water levels.
