Report on gas leak explosions submitted to the President

The report by the eight-member committee appointed to probe gas leak related explosions has been submitted to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa this evening.

The report was submitted by the Chairman of the committee Prof. Shantha Walpola of the University of Moratuwa and the committee members.

The report contains a number of observations and proposals.

Prof. Walpola when contacted by NewsRadio yesterday said statements were recorded from 40 factions including the gas companies, officials of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution, and consumers.

The President appointed the eight-member committee on the 30th of November to look into recent gas cylinder fires and explosions at homes, stores and other trade outlets in various parts of the country and to determine the cause and recommend possible solutions.

The committee comprises of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, Prof. Ajith de Silva of the University of Moratuwa, Prof. WDW Jayathilaka of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Commissioner of Sri Lanka Inventors Commission Prof. Narayana Sirimuthu, Additional Director General of Industrial Technology Institute Dr. Sudarshana Somasiri and Senior Deputy Director (Technical) at Sri Lanka Standard Institute Sujeewa Mahagama.
