The Department of Irrigation has requested the public to remain vigilant when bathing in rivers, streams and reservoirs.
Director of Water Management at the Department of Irrigation, Engineer D Abeysiriwardena said people should refrain from bathing in rivers or streams when they are under the influence.
He noted due to the various factors in nature, experienced swimmers could also face an accident.
Abeysiriwardena noted swimming after several months of rest and no exercise may also lead to a hamstring injury and result in drowning.
He said people could also drown if they are unaware of the depth of the water body and what’s under the surface.
He noted safety jackets are not being used in the country at present, adding it is a dangerous situation.
Abeysiriwardena stressed it is important to wear a safety jacket during boat rides as well.
