Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Akila Ellawala says it is regrettable that the government is unable to control the rice mafia, despite taking many precautionary measures.
Speaking to media in Balangoda yesterday, MP Ellawala called on all rice mill owners to take a stand against the rice mafia.
He said only a selected number of businessmen were able to control the price of rice in the local market.
MP Ellawala added it was unfortunate how such individuals continue to charge high prices, despite intervention from the President and the Cabinet.
He noted the public is burdened by such high prices for essentials, during a pandemic.
The SLPP MP called on rice mill owners to reduce prices.
When questioned by media over why the government failed to control the rice mafia, despite continuous intervention, the MP said the matter cannot be resolved within a day.
