The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has called on the government to hand over responsibility of conducting a stringent and impartial investigation into the Rambukkana unrest yesterday, to the Criminal Investigation Department.
Speaking in Parliament today, MP Kabir Hashim said a just conclusion cannot be expected through a Police investigation.
MP Hashim said Policemen involved in the incident must be summoned to Parliament for investigations, adding that a Police-led investigation cannot be approved.
The MP said a committee must be appointed in Parliament in order to commence an investigation.
Meanwhile, the Speaker said all Policemen involved in the incident are currently being investigated.
Responding, Minister of Public Security Prasanna Ranatunga said the government welcomes all views, adding that a committee comprising three officers are conducting a separate investigation in to the Rambukkana unrest.
The Minister said an investigation is also being led by the SSP of Avissawella and also revealed that the government requested the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka to conduct an independent inquiry and submit a report.
Minister Ranatunga said an investigation by the CID might also not be accepted.
