The Railway Controllers’ Association has requested the President to take immediate action against individuals who support the strike action launched by Railway Station Masters’ Association and threatened trade unions not part of the strike action.
Addressing a media briefing today, Chief Secretary of the Railway Controllers’ Association Manura Peiris said if action is not taken against them, trade unions will resort to an indefinite strike action.
Peiris said when trade union action is launched, officials gather promptly to plan out a programme to ensure trains operate.
However, he charged that officials disregarded taking action and pledged support to the union action.
He charged that the Engine Drivers Association was informed by the Railways General Manager to visit the office, and was assaulted upon arrival.
Peiris claimed as trade union leaders they condemn such actions and called on the President and the government to take prompt action.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Railway Locomotive Engine Drivers’ Association Indika Dodangoda addressing media said all necessary trains will be operated today.
He also condemned the assault on officers and attempted to prevent them from operating trains.
